A peek behind the scenes of......Robinsons Beds' Design Your Own Bed service.
Recently we were tasked with designing and building a custom made bed for a client with a big bedroom that needed filled with an equally big bed! As we build for any shape, design or size you need this was one job we were perfect for and we couldn’t wait to get started.
First step was to agree a design with the client, she picked the fabric (a stunning pink felted 100% wool), headboard design, base, bed feet and mattress. Once agreed with our designer the order was then passed over to our manufacturing team to begin the build.
The final dimensions were a mammoth 7’6 feet x 8 feet (213cmx230cm) and it was an enjoyable challenge for us to create. Our team love nothing more than getting to grips with building a unique bed in an unusual size and they’re always very proud of the finished product. The challenge with this particular build is more in logistics than in the actual build! Once built we faced one BIG question; how to get the mattress out of our workshop! Not often we build a bed so big that it becomes a logistical challenge to get it out the door. Nevertheless we persevered and with a little bit of door adjustment we got it onto our delivery van for delivery to the customer, who had assured us that they had large patio doors for easy access into a ground floor bedroom.
We are delighted with the finished item and think it looks amazing in-situ and to top it all off, we’re pleased that we have yet another happy customer.

The bed building process
The headboard was a Moscow style.
We love the bright colour that was chosen for this headboard, it’s bright, vibrant and will be a real focal point. It was a pleasure using such beautiful quality wool and we think the colour also works really well with the style and creates strong definition between the padding. It was made in 3 sections which joined together insitu and attached with German wall fixings.
The mattress
As with our base and headboard, we hand make your mattress within our bed factory. This particular mattress ‘Fantasy’ was made using over 3000 German pocket sprungs supported with reflex luxury mattress foam, quality polyester and thick layers of lambswool and silk for the ultimate comfy nights sleep.
