Sore back in bed? Maybe it's time for a new mattress

A possible cause of back pain and other aches can be as simple as using the wrong bed or mattress. The right height of bed and type of mattress for your size, weight and condition could help to cure, ease or prevent back pain or discomfort in bed depending on the underlying cause. It may only need a change of mattress to improve your condition and is a cure that is often easily overlooked.

The NHS website advises back pain caused by posture and how we lie down can have an important effect on our back and they recommend that your mattress should be firm enough to support your body while supporting the weight of your shoulders and buttocks, keeping your spine straight. Inadequate support or too soft a mattress can easily trigger lower back pain and aches in pains in other areas such as your shoulders and neck.

Back aches and pains are afflictions that affect about 80% of us at some point in our lives and for some it is a recurring or constant pain affecting their quality of life. For the majority of people it is a temporary pain or dull ache from stiffness or muscle tension that mostly affects the lower back causing problems in getting comfortable and in falling asleep easily at night.

To prevent back pain, keeping your back strong and supple is the best way to avoid the condition and the NHS suggest that in addition to having the correct bed and mattress for you, tips such as losing excess weight, staying active, avoiding sudden movements and reducing stress and anxiety are all ways that may prove useful.
