How to choose the best mattress for you

Choosing the right mattress should not be left to chance. Find out how to make the best decision when buying a new mattress and avoid costly mistakes.

Whether you’ve just bought an ultra modern low profile bed or a beautiful leather upholstered bed frame there is one essential piece of your bed that is more important than any other – The Mattress. The right mattress is crucial for a consistent, restful night’s sleep; however fantastic your bed looks, the right mattress for you is an essential ingredient to a great sleep.

At Robinsons we are committed to helping you find the ideal mattress. Our highly trained and experienced staff will do all they can to make sure you buy a mattress that is perfect for you.

Top mattress tips

  1. Understand your needs to determine what mattress type is best suited for your size, weight, medical conditions, aches, bedroom climate, etc
    • Pocket sprung mattresses are best for luxurious support, offer better ventilation and coolness than foam, and help to prevent 'roll together'
    • Coil sprung mattresses are generally a cheaper option than individual pocket springs, where a coil spring unit is combined with optimal padding.
    • Memory foam and latex mattresses are great for pressure relieving comfort and best used with slatted and well-ventilated bed bases.
    • Other mattress fillings and padding include lambswool, alpaca fibre, teased cotton, felt, polyester, latex, memory foam – these help determine comfort, warmth, firmness, luxury, breathability and whether or not the mattress needs turned regularly.
  2. Lie on the mattress to really get a feel for it, ideally for a few minutes in your typical sleeping positions. By doing this you can tell if it’s firm enough, soft enough or provides enough support in your usual sleeping positions. If you have a partner you should bring them with you so you can both lie on it at the same time to make sure it suits you both. If you have very differing needs a zip-link mattress may be the best solution, without either of you having to compromise. The correct mattress for you should adapt in an anatomically correct way to your body’s contours and support the spinal column in all sleeping positions allowing the inter vertebral discs the correct rest. Your mattress can prevent long-term disc damage and relieve muscle tension so choosing the correct one is important.
  3. Sit on the edge to make sure the mattress doesn’t sag and is firm enough to take your weight.
  4. Trust the brand: Robinsons are a long established company specialising in handmade mattresses to your exact requirements and dimensions, from our factory floor direct to your door.
  5. Beware cheap mattress deals as these can often be poorly-filled with little support, and not a good investment for your sleep wellbeing.
  6. Mattress size and fit: if your bed and base are not being bought at the same time then you should make sure they will fit together, so measure them carefully to ensure you buy the correct size of mattress.

Remember not all mattresses have been made to the same quality standards or firmness. At Robinsons we are here to help and guide you through the process of buying a bespoke mattress while giving you the best advice from our many years of experience.
